Today’s learners cannot imagine life without the internet and supporting technology. The concept of the traditional library is changing to include technology, online tools and spaces for collaboration and exploration.​​​

School Literary Materials Selection

Related to Ministerial Order (#034/2025), Standards for the Selection, Availability, and Access of School Library Materials, CBE has published an administrative regulation AR3051: School Literary Materials Selection. Families and community members can request a review or reconsideration of a literary resource in a school's learning commons by completing the School Library Materials Reconsideration Challenge Request through their local school. 

CBE also has an eLibrary online tool available to families, students and staff, which is an online catalogue for all CBE school libraries with detailed information on books, DVD’s and other resources that are available to borrow.

Additionally, parents and legal guardians are welcome to review classroom library collections by contacting your child's school. ​

Welcome to the Battalion Park Learning Commons

Our Learning Commons is a wonderful learning environment for students. Our shelves are stocked with a large collection of well-designed books for learning, enjoyment and general interest. We have been very fortunate to have such incredible support of the School Council as well as the CBE, so our collection is kept current and we are able to replace any well-loved books.

Students come to the Learning Commons once in a 6-day schedule. Students are encouraged to choose at least one just right reading book. Older students are allowed to choose another book of their own choice. Books are due back each library day with options to renew.

The learning commons has a core group of parent volunteers that helps with the smooth transition of returned books on very busy days. Their help is very much appreciated and it allows the students access to returned books very quickly. We are very proud of our collection as it offers students and teachers a large assortment of books for their teaching and learning. 

Reading is important

It is important for children to practice reading at home so they can become better readers. How can parents support their child's reading at home?

  • Read aloud to your child.
  • Find a comfortable spot where you can sit side by side and your child can see the pages.
  • Read a variety of reading material; stories, poems, information books, magazines, etc.
  • Stop at interesting parts and ask your child to guess what will happen next.
  • Ask your child to retell the story to you, starting with the beginning, through the middle, to the end.
  • Discuss any interesting or new words that you may come across in the text.
  • If the book is an information book, discuss what you learned.
  • Take turns reading to each other. You read one page then tour child reads the next and so on. You can model good reading to your child and have fun!
  • Reread favourite books together or ask your child to read them to you.
  • Offer regular praise and encouragement.
  • Visit the public library with your child to borrow books.
  • Visit your local bookstores and browse for books with your child. If possible, purchase books to add to your child's own collection.
